Questions?
What questions do you have about the Hopi people or about our VIM trip?
Dates: Friday, August 1, through Saturday, August 9 Destination: Hopi Mission School, Kykotsmovi, Arizona. Web page for the school: http://hopimissionfoundation.org/School/ Transportation: Flight to/from Arizona from DC area. (Flight details to be determined by the end of April!) We’ll rent minivans to drive to Kykotsmovi and for use during the week. Those who plan to fly out early or stay later will need to get their own plane tickets. For these team members, the cost of airfare (the cost if you had flown with our group) will be deducted from the total cost of the trip. We must insist, though, that team members who fly out before August 1 meet the rest of our team at the airport upon our arrival. Also, any team members who plan to stay in Arizona beyond August 9 need to leave the school when the group leaves. It is important that we arrive and leave together. Lodging: We will sleep in the school gym – a really nice, relatively new building on the school grounds. We’ll sleep in sheets/blankets on top of air mattresses. The gym has separate men’s and women’s bathroom/shower facilities. We installed mirrors two summers ago! Meals: We will fix/eat most of our meals at the school in their cafeteria. Meals tend to be simple with breakfast and lunch more of a “get your own” with fixings set out. We’ll be asking about diets/allergies during our orientation meetings to be sure everyone gets what they need. We’ll also try to eat one breakfast at the Hopi Cultural Center so we can try out their delicious blue corn pancakes! We’re also going to see if we can get someone to come to the school to prepare a traditional Hopi meal for us. We open our meals to any school staff who are on-site while we’re there – a great time of fellowship! Projects: Our main “project” is Christian fellowship… continuing to build relationships with our Hopi sisters and brothers as well as getting to know each other! We’ll also do whatever light construction and fix-up is needed at the school. (We probably won’t know what’s needed until we get there… we need to be flexible!) In the past, this has included drywall, sanding, moving fences, laying tile, shoveling sand, landscaping, simple electric work, plus building/installing gutters and a water barrel. We’ll also organize and run a morning VBS program (Monday through Friday) for the Hopi children. Last summer we had between 8 and 15 children each day. It was wonderful! Hopi Culture: We will try to provide a variety of cultural experiences for the group. In the past these have included a short trip to Grand Canyon, Hopi dances, demonstrations by local artisans, guided visits to Old Oraibi and other ancient villages on nearby mesas, and scenic drives through the reservation. Cost: The cost per person is also being determined at this time, and the final cost will be shared by the end of this month. The cost will include air fare, ground transportation, lodging, and food. If cost is a factor… or perhaps a deterrent… please consider doing a fund-raiser or asking friends/family for financial support. Also – don’t hesitate to talk with me or Reinette about a loan or scholarship. Cost should NEVER get in the way of a call to missions! We firmly believe that God will help us make this trip a reality for all who are called! Orientation Sessions: We expect all team members to be present at all three orientation sessions. During these sessions we’ll be sharing important trip information, distributing and collecting required paperwork, answering questions, and doing important team-building activities. The dates for the orientation sessions are: Sunday, May 18 (1-3PM @ DUMC); Sunday, June 8 (1-3PM @ DUMC); Sunday, July 13 (1-3PM @ DUMC). Pizza and beverages will be provided!
